Now let us go into the various steps…

Apply For An International Passport
The first step is to apply for an international passport from the Nigerian Immigration Service. I did one for N60,000 or less in 2023.

IELTS / OET Tests
You will need it to register, write and pass IELTS/OET before starting the process as it is presumed to be the most challenging of all. It takes between 24hrs- a few weeks or even months depending on your circumstance.

IELTS stands for International English Language testing System. It is a test of English exam that needs to be written and the required score gotten. Results come out in 14 days after the exam. There are various practice materials to read in order to pass it.

IELTS registration is N83,000. The minimum band score are;

7.0 in Listening
6.5 in Writing
7.0 in Reading
7.0 in Speaking with an overall band score of 7.0

Alternatively, Occupation English Test (OET) is about N240,000. The minimum grades are;

B in Listening
C+ in Writing
B in Reading
B in Speaking

Open An Account With The NMC
After passing your English exam you need to go to the [=[https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/joi ... tion/begin /NMC website /] and set up an account, you will be required to complete the eligibility and qualification application. You will then need to pay an evaluation fee of £140.
Pay *£140* (application fee) to NMC UK after filling all the required information.
At this stage, upload the data page of your passport, RN certificate (notification from NMCN can be used here if your certificate is not available yet) and IELTS/OET result (optional at this point).
You will have a personalized NMC portal through which you can monitor your progress all through the whole registration process. NMC UK will confirm receipt of payment of the application fee by email which will include your application reference (16 digit) to use for your application for NMCN verification.

Verify Your Nursing Qualifications With The NMCN

Visit https://portal.nmcn.gov.ng/
You will then need to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for verification of your nursing qualification certificate and license, this currently costs N68, 500 Naira.
The required documents to send are
Notification/Certificate,
License (you therefore must ensure your license is up to date), remember to include your CRM which can be found on your NMC portal,. It takes weeks and months for some to be verified, mine took three months.
.
The following details will be required:
NMCN PIN on your license (Registration number on your license).
Date of first registration.
Birth certificate
Letter requesting for verification and good standing
Application reference number.

You will be sending your application to:

Nursing and Midwifery Council
23 Portland Place
London
W1B 1PZ (post code)

Computer-Based Test (CBT)
Wait to be verified (notification usually come by an email) as well as an authorization to test (ATT) email from Pearson Vue (the organization that handles part one test of competency (CBT) to book for your CBT.

After you have been verified you will be sent an authorization to take your CBT.
Book for your CBT (£83) and sit for the exam. Your CBT is done through Pearson Vue website. The examination is based on UK general nursing theory, 120 MCQ and is written in home country. The result is valid for two years. You have a maximum of three attempts after which that application will be closed, and you can open a new one. The result comes out within 48 hours.

Upload Documents To NMC
After passing the CBT, go to your NMC portal and upload your documents such as
police clearance certificate,
notification/certificate,
name and details of medical regulator (your physician... a Doctor or an occupational health therapist who can attest that you are fit to work in UK).
and IELTS(academics)/OET result (without this, you cannot progress beyond this stage and you must have the expected band score/ grade as the case may be).

Pay NMC Registration Fee
Pay the final registration fee of £153 to NMC UK, this used to be paid after passing OSCE in the UK but now paid whilst in Nigeria. After paying this the NMC sends a mail to your medical doctor/regulator for your health declaration, so you have to inform your doctor beforehand. NMC will also ask for your good standing from NMCN and as soon as response is gotten it is updated on your portal. It is therefore important to always check your portal to monitor your progress.

NB: You can only get the NMC UK PIN after you have sat and passed your part two test of competency, OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).

Find A Job
Immediately after passing your IELTS / OET and CBT you can start searching for a job. Luckily, you don't need to go far: Nurses.co.uk is a market leader when it comes to the number and choice of nursing jobs in the UK!

NHS Jobs :https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/

You can apply to NHS jobs – browse by employer to find NHS Trusts.
https://apps.trac.jobs/

Alternatively, you can send emails to some NHS trusts to declare your interest in working for them.

Build Your Nursing CV
Your choice of work setting is dependent on many factors and it’s important you choose wisely as everyone’s preference is different. When you apply for a job you will be asked to submit your Curriculum Vitae. You can build your CV right here on Nurses.co.uk using their clever CV builder – join to get started building your nursing CV here. There’s also a CV guide, explaining what you will need to write about in your CV. You will usually need one or two documents like IELTS, CBT results, Passport etc. Keep them handy during your applications. Remember to research on the area before making a choice, as there is variable cost of living per area. You will have an online interview (remember to smile). I failed my first interview because I was not smiling. As soon as you pass your interview you will be asked to sign an offer letter.

Offer Letter
After passing the job interview(s), choose a comfortable offer letter (please🙏 ensure you read your offer letter well with understanding to know what the trust is offering), sign the offer letter and send your documents (for pre-employment checks) to the trust.

Once they are happy/satisfied with the checks, they will email you your certificate of sponsorship (a document to prove that you have been employed in UK by a particular organisation who is willing pay you XYZ amount yearly). The CoS replaces bank statements other direct visa applicants have to submit. It shows you have a sponsor that will support your stay in the UK. The CoS also contains an employment start date.
NB: The certificate of sponsorship (CoS) is an indispensable document for visa application.

This usually takes a day or some days after interview to be out. Remember to have enough information about the hospital and location, and what the relocation package is before signing the offer letter. The offer letter comes with the relocation package, your employer may cover your flight fees, visa fees, medical screening fees, IELTS / OET, CBT exam fees, COS fees, accommodation, OSCE fees. Remember your employer may pay for any of these or all of these. It depends on what your offer letter says, while some employers will allow you pay for these and reimburse you on arrival, it all depends, remember to ask all questions regarding this before signing. Some employers only pay for COS and you have to self-sponsor. Your offer letter states your salary and what band you are starting with. Some employers consider your years of experience in Nigeria. Your employer may start you as a band 3 or band 4 nurse, after passing OSCE you become band 5.I started as a band 3 nurse before passing OSCE.

Medical Screening
The United Kingdom require you to have a negative Tuberculosis (TB) results which is valid for 6 months before entering into the UK. This costs 57,800 naira, the result comes out within hours, remember not to do it too early until you are sure of your start date, do not be like me - I had to do it twice!
Book and attend your medical screening (tuberculosis test) via https://mymedical.iom.int/apps/omas/#_frmHome

You will arrive in UK as a pre-registration nurse. This mean that you will be placed as a band 3 or 4 on the pay scale.

Commence training for your OSCE.
👉Once you have written your OSCE and passed, your NMC PIN will be issued and you'll automatically be upgraded to band 5. Make your pounds 💷 and enjoy.

Police Clearance
Obtain your Police Character Certificate (PCC) from force CID, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
or
Force CID, Police Criminal Registry, Alagbon, Lagos State.
This document last for 3 months and cost between

This is to certify that you have no criminal record, it costs between N30, 000 to N50,000 e-Certificate depending on your location. It has 3-month validity.

Certificate Of Sponsorship (COS)
This is needed to show that you have a sponsor, you therefore do not need any bank statements to apply for visa. In order to apply for a COS your employer will require some documents from you such as: police clearance certificate, TB certificate etc. If you have a spouse and/or children remember to inform your employer to have your COS cover your dependents (spouse and children).Your COS has your start date on it. It usually takes 1-6 weeks depending on the circumstance.

Visa

Once your CoS is in, apply for your visa via gov.uk book for your tier 2 visa biometric appointment, it usually takes three weeks for the decision to be out, all things being equal. The TLS centres in Lagos and Abuja oversee this.
Create a profile.
Provide all relevant information( DO NOT LIE)
Make payment of approximately $300 for your visa.
Choose a date for biometric (what people call "visa interview")
Upload all the required documents.
Confirm that the documents are correct before uploading them
Submit and prepare (get all necessary documents ready) for your biometric.

When you visa is ready, inform the recruitment team in your trust and discuss your arrival date.

Once your arrival date has been confirmed with an approval to book your flight, book your flight to any UK airport

OSCE
After arriving to the UK your employer will book you for OSCE and OSCE training sessions. You then become a band 5 nurse after passing OSCE (watch the Nurses.co.uk video on how to pass your OSCEs).
