If you’ve been thinking about becoming a nurse educator, now could be your time. Nurses are leaving the profession faster than vacancies are being filled. This growing void between the number of nurse educators and the demand for trained nurses is a major concern at a time when there is greater demand for specialist nurses.
Overview
As a nurse educator, you’ll teach nurses at all levels about nursing issues and patient care, either in the classroom or a clinical setting. Depending on your education and experience, your students might include:
•
- Aspiring nurses just beginning coursework
• Newly minted registered nurses (RNs)
• Experienced nurses preparing for certification in a specialty
• Nurses moving to a new unit in a hospital setting
• Graduate students pursuing advanced degrees
NMCN Minimum Requirements To Become A Nurse Educator In Nigeria
The Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria at its Emergency Meeting held in February, 2022 has approved Bachelor of Nursing Science degree (BNSc) with Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) or Masters in Education (M.Ed.) as the minimum requirements for teaching in nursing training institutions in Nigeria.
The above decision of the Board is in line with the education reform of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria which reiterates the importance of Nurses with higher qualifications to teach in the Colleges of Nursing Sciences for the award of National and Higher National Diploma (ND/HND) Certificates.
In view of the above, Council will no longer accept diploma qualification without Bachelor of Nursing Science for registration as an Educator.
