Are you a registered quack?

Do you have a question only another nurse can handle? This is the place to post it.

Are you a registered quack?

Unread post by NurseTogether1 »

The topic raises some curiosity, right? Yes, am curious to know who registered quacks are too.

It is no news that in the health care system in Africa, the nursing profession has suffered from infiltration of quacks especially in Nigeria where anyone can open a private hospital as long as they have the money to fund it and are able to pay the meagre registration to the responsible body. Whether they have the license to practice or not if they are able to present papers of a registered professional at registration, they are good to go ahead.
These facilities employ and train unqualified health care professionals and call them ‘‘nurses’’. Although not majorly trained by nurses or licensed by the nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria to be called nurse, yet they have resolved to call them that.

The social media has seen campaigns and agitations for this group of people to be brought to book especially because of the havoc they cause and the fact that the society is endangered by their existence. Beside not being licensed which is an offence, this group of people go ahead to carry out procedures that are way beyond their limits thereby adding salt to the already bleeding injury.

Cries and petitions have been raised, signed, and sealed to the professional body beginning from the local government areas to the state and to the federal level to ensure that the society is rid of these killers in human clothing.
We have seen the closure of some of the facilities in recent times which shows that the profession is taking baby steps toward sanitising itself of the cancer of quackery. Hopefully, with more effort from every registered professional and the nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria, we can wipe clean the slate of quackery in Nigeria for good soon, just being hopeful though.

What about the registered quack? Is the profession ever going to be able to rid itself of them? Considering that THREE THINGS MAKE YOU A PROFESSIONAL NURSE, which are REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION and LICENSURE, when you practice with an expired license, are you not registered quack?

One version of the story is that the MCPDP makes it practically impossible for many to renew their licence on time. This means that for some, the NMCN and its requirement for renewal is responsible for quackery amongst registered professionals. Another set of people said that they renew this license and it never get released by council until it either expires in their custody, gets lost in the office or in transit, meaning again that the professional body is to blame.
Another view is that the fee for renewal and training is exorbitant, especially as not all nurses are gainfully employed and those who are, are either paid such a meagre salary that they cannot spare to pay these fees- renewal and training fees. This again is another pointer that the body has failed the professional as it has not considered the peculiarities of its professional instead has set a flat rate for training and payment
So, what is the resolve? I heard that the WCEA free courses can give you some credit units for renewal and you will either not need an MCPDP, or you are to attend one instead of two but how many nurses are accessing these courses? Who do we blame for this?

I have personally renewed my license online and the hard copy was picked from the NMCN office, this I see as a solution to the delays of delivery or having to go to the office several time especially for those who live outside these offices where renewal is done but how many nurses are actively engaging their PUF platform?

Can we not push for any training related to nursing attended in those three years to be used instead of the MCPD that is expensive? Or even your hours and schedule of work uploaded like it is in some developed countries for their revalidation? So that we cut cost for nurses?

Are you a registered quack? Or do you know someone who is? What do you think are the reasons for this in your own circumstance and words? What is the way forward, by this I mean your suggestion on what can be done to curb this menace that is rocking the professional standard of practice in Nigeria?
