Expiration date means the day a food or drug or any product at all should not be taken, eaten or used.
It also shows the shelf life expectancy of a product or the date on which a product can no longer be used.
Expiry dates are usually confused with Best-before dates but there is a definite distinction.
Best-before dates inform consumers how long a product should be expected to stay fresh and may still be consumed even after that date has passed.
However, Products with expiration dates are not to be consumed on or after the stated date.
Eating expired foods or foods that are past their best-by date can expose your body to harmful bacteria that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and a fever.

4 Possible Dangers of eating expired foods

1. Nothing may happen:
According to the USDA, many dates listed on foods refer to quality, not safety, this means that certain items won't hurt you if you eat them—they may just taste stale or lose flavour as time goes on.
Even so, it's still not the best idea to eat expired foods regularly.

2. Loss of Nutritional value:
As food gets expired its freshness and nutritional value diminishes.

3. Food poisoning:
Expired foods may also cause food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning; fever, chills, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and vomiting.
When it comes to food poisoning anyway, according to the US library of medicine.
Expired foods are the are most times the smallest culprit.

4. Exposure to dangerous amounts of harmful bacteria: harmful bacteria such as; E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella and Bacteroides.
According to foodsafety.gov many of these harmful bacteria have been linked to illness, hospitalization, and even death.
The bottom line here is to be careful and avoid eating expired food specifically perishable foods like spinach. As these to harbour bacteria easily.

However, according to the USDA, bacteria that causes poisoning does not grow in the freezer.
So it is always advisable to preserve all Perishables in the freezer.
