10 Essential Tips of Pregnancy

Unread post by Kunle Emmanuel »

When you miss your monthly flow, you are assumed to be pregnant all things being equal. This then means you are about being a mum, after nine or 10 months, right?

Whether you are pregnant by choice or by chance, the paramount thing is that you are pregnant and you ought to take care of yourself and your unborn baby, healthwise.
Below are 10 ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of pregnancy. Or better still, call them 10 essential tips you ought to abide by while pregnant.

1. You should not take medication on your own without consulting your doctor. In your nine months’ journey, desist from self-medication. Days are gone when you feel feverish and suspect that it is malaria and pronto, you walk into any pharmaceutical shop close to you and buy malaria drugs on your own. Self-medication is dangerous and more dangerous when you are pregnant. There are some drugs you are not supposed to take while pregnant so as to avoid any form of malformation for your baby.

2. You should not fling away your routine drugs. Take them on daily basis, according to your doctor’s prescription. It is no good news when your tiny infant starts having jaundice at birth because you refused to take some medications that ought to have prevented it.

3. Start your ante-natal clinic early enough so that you would be taken care of. Don’t wait until you are seven months due, simply because your friend waited that long and she was still able to deliver safely. There is no crime in starting as early as when you are 16 weeks gone. You start receiving lectures on the signs of labour, what to do when you observe those signs, your blood pressure would be regularly checked and some other necessary medical tests can be done early enough.

4. Learn to tell your nurse everything about your pregnancy. Confide in him/her. Information needed to help you at this stage shouldn’t be concealed. Don’t hide your age from your doctor for the fear that he would insist you have your birth by caesarean session. Even if he insists, he may have his reasons. It is for your own safety and the safety of your baby.

5. Eat the right food. Good foods would give you enough blood and strength you would need at the time of delivery. Or don’t you know a woman in labour is equivalent to a warrior in the battle field? When you deliver safely and carry your baby, it means you have won the battle.

6. Don’t wear tight under-pants that would keep you uncomfortable. This is the period you need to consider comfort while dressing up. So, jettison every tight under-pant, girdle of any form and body magic, until you are delivered of your baby.

7. Don’t brood over how you would deliver your baby. Don’t lose sleep over that. I know it could be fearful at times when you remember that soon, the labour would start with its usual painful contractions. Don’t bother much about it. Sleep well, so that you don’t shoot up your blood pressure. It is rather unnecessary to think of how to cross the bridge, wait till when you get there- you will cross it. Always occupy your thoughts with positive things. Remember, those you are far older than were still able to push their babies out.

8. When your amniotic fluid/water breaks, report to the hospital at once. Even if your doctor told you it is false labour but that you ought to be hospitalised for a few days and wait for the real labour to start, hearken to his instruction and wait. Some women disregard that and go home only to be infected before coming back to the hospital. Remember, once your water has broken, there are chances that you can easily be infected. That is why your doctor may choose to place you on antibiotics until the real labour starts. It is all for your good.

9. It is not out of place to read journals on pregnancy and what you should know. Also feel free to ask your doctor about anything you read that confuses you.

10. Always know your Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) off-hand. And also know it that labour may start two weeks to the date or two weeks after. When you are long overdue for delivery and labour is still a far cry, your midwife may want to induce labour. And who are you not to accept? So that your unborn baby would not begin to be stressed right inside of you.

You shall not eat junks regularly just because you long for them. Ensure you eat well. Take a lot of vegetable in your food. And fruits must not be lacking in your fridge. Eating a healthy, varied diet during pregnancy will help you to get most of the vitamins and minerals you need. There are some vitamins and minerals that are very important. If you are short of iron, you’d probably get very tired and may suffer from anaemia. Lean meat, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, and nuts contain iron. If you’d like to eat peanuts or foods that contain peanuts (such as peanut butter), you can do so as part of a healthy balanced diet unless you’re allergic to them or your health professional advises you not to. Many breakfast cereals have iron added. If the iron level in your blood becomes low, your doctor would advise you to take iron supplements.

Remember your routine drugs and supplements. Desist from throwing your folic acid into trash can just because you feel they smell.

It is good to get vitamins and minerals from the food you eat, but when you are pregnant you will need to take some supplements as well to make sure you get everything you need. Folic acid is important for pregnancy as it can help prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects. You should take a 400 microgram folic acid tablet every day while you are trying to get pregnant and until you are 12 weeks pregnant.

If you didn’t take folic acid before you conceived, you should start as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. You should also eat foods that contain folate (the natural form of folic acid), such as green leafy vegetables and brown rice. Some breakfast cereals, breads and margarines have folic acid added to them.
