Beyond the love of Nursing uniform in Nigeria

Unread post by Kunle Emmanuel »

Still on our loved for NURSING UNIFORM:

Had it been Medical Doctors love SCRUBS and LAB COATS the way nurses love their uniform they would do everything possible to stop all cadres of HCWs (including Nurses) from using them in Nigerian hospital settings just to satisfied their professional egos (boundaries and identities) but they never did so instead they pay more attention to their professional excellence (education, research and practice)

In our clinical settings Doctors exhibit better knowledgeable talents and practical dexterities in discharging their duties than Nurses.
For example:
1. A Nurse would spend years giving intramuscular injections but could not explain the origin and insertion of Deltoid muscle or compartments of the thigh.

2. A nurse would spend many hours talking or writing about "NURSES UNIFORM" but could not even list muscle of speech/mastication or describe blood supply to the hands

3. A nurse would spend years administering drugs to the patient but could not explain whether or not there is drug-drug interaction between them. Some don't even know that food-drug interactions exist too.

4. A nurse would spend years in practice but never consult his textbooks since after graduation from school let alone conducting or coauthoring a research.

5. A nurse would spend years in clinical practice but don't have computing/internet skills to consult internet-based health resources either at point of care or for personal consumption. Various researches on Knowledge and use of internet-based resources among Doctors and nurses have shown disappointing results against nurses. A simple Google search would tell you more on this.

6. Nurses who want to further their education encounter more serious setbacks from their superiors/colleagues than medical doctors do.

7. Majority of private clinics employed more quacks at detriment of RNs/RMs
8. There is paradigm shift towards acquiring higher degrees but we are still far behind our sister's professions like Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Optometry etc. These professions have started going beyond Bachelor degrees but Doctors of Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Optometry which have same academic values with MBBS as well as having same entry and terminal points with Medical Doctors in the civil service. Nurses are the least in areas of research as well as in acquiring postgraduate and fellowship qualifications.

9. There are a lots of aberrations in relation to nurses remunerations, proper placement and career progression as a result of injustice from employers of labor that need to be attended squarely. It was reported that some facilities don't employ nurses with single qualification and also don't promote them beyond certain level which is contrary to the nation's scheme of service and NANNM, NMCN and other stakeholders are watching these aberrations.

10. It is common knowledge that Our public (i don't know of private) colleges of Nursing and Midwifery sell application forms to and admit hundreds of candidates for a slot reserved for 50 - 100 candidates making them vulnerable to exploitation and unnecessary spending and time-wasting.

We really have to start thinking beyond the UNIFORM as we have avalanche of problems that need to be put forward than talking about image of nurses with regards to their uniform that even quacks are wearing. Let's face the challenges for our own better.

The best way to take our image to greater height is focusing on nursing education, research and clinical judgement/excellence. These are the bedrocks of any profession.

With regards to UNIFORM only military and paramilitary forces have a standard uniform that camouflaging as one will result to trouble. Even NMCN could only fight against quackery and not the uniform.
Even in EXAMS on Nursing care plan, they do ask us to 'Identify and solve in order of PRIORITY four nursing diagnoses of a patient". So let us identify and solve our (nurses) problems in order of priority.

If you do not take up the CHALLENGES their are colleagues (including me) that would take it up for you. WE WILL NOT RELENT ON THIS.
We Have a Very Long Way to Go!

Let my attackers (about UNIFORM) calm down to read and see avalanche of nurses' problems beyond UNIFORM and their personal opinions. Let them be CALMING DOWN

We have all heard that buy Instagram followers au allows you to choose how many fans you have. You can change your limits at anytime. So if you have been having trouble getting followers, the easiest way to do it is to make sure you never exceed the number of followers you have set. This is actually good news for anyone that is interested in starting an account but doesn't want to invest the time and energy into it. Once you start growing your number of followers, the hard work begins!
