Taking Care of Yourself While Taking Care of Others

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has designated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse.” ANA defines a healthy nurse as someone who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional well-being. As a workforce of 3.6 million nurses, we have a huge opportunity to impact the health of our nation and the patients we serve. However, promotion of health and well-being should begin within one’s self.

Long shifts, overtime, night shifts and high-acuity patients are only a few of the reasons nursing can become both physically and mentally exhausting. Make a commitment to try at least one of the following tips in the upcoming week.

• Go to bed at least 30 minutes to 1 hour earlier the nights before your shift.

• Make it a point to compliment two co-workers every shift.

• Schedule a PTO/vacation day just for yourself, GUILT FREE. You work hard, you deserve it! Believe it or not, the building will still stand if you take a day off.

• Pack your lunch and snacks to work for a week. Plan to eat something every four hours, no matter how busy it is. Having it with you and available is the key.

• Take 10 minutes a day to read or study something. It can be for learning or leisure. Read a professional article, a chapter in a book, a devotion, etc.

It is so easy to become overwhelmed with the chaos of work, school, families, ball games and so on. The result is we often neglect our own health and well-being to care for others. The reality is taking care of ourselves first will allow us to empower and serve as better role models to those around us

The primary role of a nurse, is to care for individuals, families and Communities through health and illness. We are trained caregivers, but sometimes we forget the importance of self-care.

In past, countless times I hurriedly leave the house to work without eating,( especially morning duties)hoping to take a break at work, but end up getting got up with procedures and finally skipping breakfast and lunch.

Hey Nurses!

We preach self care to our patients and clients, but how often do we take care of ourselves? We are expert when it comes to directing and giving advice to our patients on ways to focus on their health, but we often neglect some of the same advice.

If there's one thing I don't joke with, is giving my self "self care and love". This past week, has been hectic for me but despite all, I still hold my balance.

No one is responsible for your self care and well being but you!

Learn to make commitment to yourself and do the things required to take care of you.

Learn to say "NO" to things and activities that do not add up to your schedule.

Make self care your routine, except you want to be that Nurse turn patient who is been manage for exhaustion and burn out.
