New Changes By UK NMC For Overseas Nurses

Unread post by Queenet »

The unintended consequence of their 2009 EU mandate (which took effect in 2013) that put a halt to accepting well trained nurses onto their register. This autumn the UK will offer a theory test (offered around the world) and a clinical test (given here in the UK) for overseas trained nurses wanting to obtain their UK registration. This replaces the ONP (Overseas Nursing Programme)

It is now official, RN's with an IELTS score of 7, a 3 year (reputable) university based degree and one year's experience have a new way to obtain a UK RN license. The process is as follows:

Step One sign up for the test – no documents all self-certification

Step Two is the theory test- a multiple choice computer based given at Person Vue test centres

Step Three your documents are uploaded to the NMC for assessment. (No more post delays!)

Step Four clinical exam (OSCE) given here in the UK . ( Objective Structured Clinical Examination)

Once you have completed step four your UK registration will be issued quickly. It is anticipated this will be within a week.

For those of you that have received a 3, 6 or 9 month ONP decision, the NMC has agreed to accept a portion of study hours and we believe most if not all decisions will subsequently change to a 3 month supervised practice period. If you have been rejected we have been told that you WILL be eligible for the exams (again provided your course was not entirely on line). If you are still in the middle of the NMC process you too will be able to take the exam and if you get a decision letter in the coming months saying 3, 6 or 9 months you too will be given the option to do the supervised practice or the exam. We are working on finding out if your fees will be transferred and we doubt you will need to resubmit documents.

As always your nurse manager and I are always on the other end of the phone or email to help answer any questions.

Alleluia I see the light!!
