Nurses' week.
Time to make reflections, restructure, rebrand and package the image of nurses and nursing in Nigeria.
There is immediate need for educational restructuring. Nursing education should move from ministries of health to federal ministry of education (national university commission).
Nursing education should be university base to give it its rightful status while the three years schools should train nursing assistants whose curriculum will be developed and training supervise strictly by the NMCN. Nurse assistants will take off the arched workload of nurses like bed making, dusting, to give room for scientific evidence based nursing.
Nurses should maintain its loyalty under NANNM as the overall political wing. Smaller associations like APNON, peri-operative, UGONSA, etc should be answerable to the mother association. Nurses should not give room to any smaller association to supersede NANNM thereby breeding divisive tendencies.
Nurses should strategize to join politics from ward to federal levels. Our struggles are being hampered because we are imprisoned with hospital work and we have nobody out there to pursue our course in the executive or legislature.
Nurses should learn to believe in their numerical strength, power and themselves. We should go solo and make demands from our employers on promoting and enhancing conducive milieu for nurses to practice and of course our rightful emoluments. We must engage and give our inputs to the president, legislature and state governors when it comes to health policies. We should never back down from our struggles. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemies within and outside. We should say no to other professionals riding on our shoulders to actualise their demands living us with nothing. In a joint demand, we must always ask what is our take/benefits before joining.
I implore all local, state and national (NANNM) to use this week and do the needful for nurses and nursing profession. Communication is power, make good use of it.
Create think tank committee in each branch as a planning and advisory body.
I wish all nurses and midwives successful week.

Goodwill message 2019
The biggest problem of nurses in general is this illusionary belief that talk without walking the talk will improve their condition of service and professional upliftment. It is this belief that slowed our professional growth. if we could just harmonised our thinking, problems and our needs, go solo and present to the government in power, our hiccough will be given a hearing ears. Nurses shouldn't allow others to submit their demands before we start shouting. We should make our demands separately. Nurses must stop chasing mirage, imagining some utopia. Utopias are never realized in life.
The actual problem of nurses is not the profession but lack of shared values and individual mentalities.
The day nurses/midwives wakeup, stop looking for an internal/external enemy and realize that we ourselves are our problems is the day we shall get closer to finding solution.
I have often told nurses that I am happiest whenever i see my colleagues invited for introduction ceremonies and were given chance to discuss on topical issues especially on health in their locality. Also to give their little might to developmental projects in their communities.
Every ill you diagnose from a senior nurse, mirror yourself may be you will find twice or thrice the magnitude in yourself, so correct your seniors politely with respect.
The young/graduate nurses complain of elder nurses' incompetence, yet they go ahead to champion incompetence in almost every aspect of patient care. We handover wards in the corridors, sleep on nocte duty, living duty post empty, roaming about the hospital. They give out "substandard" nursing/midwifery management.
I often ask myself; if nurses can give the public right management in and out of health facilities, the sky will be our starting point when it comes for their support. The public will give us full support when it comes to our demands from government. Nurses needs the public more than the public needs them; you know we have many rivals.
Perhaps one day as nurses, we will self reflect, look within and realize, that we are the same demons we are trying to fight. We should get united, creative and think to get world class nursing/midwifery delivery in the state.
Stop the sucks in public health institutions and give out excellent output.
Nurses that show anger, rants, complain at work place about the system are the ones reminded of their daily incompetencies and weaknesses as a nurse or midwife.
The saddest story is nurses cannot make their wards clean with that refreshing scent. We mishandle the few instruments, equipment and bed linens in our custody.
It is not problem of the government supply but it is nurses' problem. We are too scared of self-criticism. We dabble in escapism and try to find scapegoats in our colleagues, leaders and government.
As Plato wrote in the Republic; "like man, like state." We can't have better leaders until we have better followers. A head nurse can't create great milieu without great nurses. It doesn't matter how great the head nurse is, if he has crap nurses, he will have a crap nursing delivery service. This is the case we have in most of our health facilities.
As a nurse or midwife, play your part to make health facilities great and stop the blame game.
