Nurses Week 2018 Goodwill Message Aliyu Garba

Nurses' week.
Time to make reflections, restructure, rebrand and package the image of nurses and nursing in Nigeria.
There is immediate need for educational restructuring. Nursing education should move from ministries of health to federal ministry of education (national university commission).
Nursing education should be university base to give it its rightful status while the three years schools should train nursing assistants whose curriculum will be developed and training supervise strictly by the NMCN. Nurse assistants will take off the arched workload of nurses like bed making, dusting, to give room for scientific evidence based nursing.
Nurses should maintain its loyalty under NANNM as the overall political wing. Smaller associations like APNON, peri-operative, UGONSA, etc should be answerable to the mother association. Nurses should not give room to any smaller association to supersede NANNM thereby breeding divisive tendencies.
Nurses should strategize to join politics from ward to federal levels. Our struggles are being hampered because we are imprisoned with hospital work and we have nobody out there to pursue our course in the executive or legislature.
Nurses should learn to believe in their numerical strength, power and themselves. We should go solo and make demands from our employers on promoting and enhancing conducive milieu for nurses to practice and of course our rightful emoluments. We must engage and give our inputs to the president, legislature and state governors when it comes to health policies. We should never back down from our struggles. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemies within and outside. We should say no to other professionals riding on our shoulders to actualise their demands living us with nothing. In a joint demand, we must always ask what is our take/benefits before joining.
I implore all local, state and national (NANNM) to use this week and do the needful for nurses and nursing profession. Communication is power, make good use of it.
Create think tank committee in each branch as a planning and advisory body.
I wish all nurses and midwives successful week.
