NANNM Meets Minister of Health; Reiterates Nursing Internship, Unified Scheme of service
The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, on 3rd December 2015, has called on all health care practitioners to seek a robust partnership where quality health care system is a prime goal.
Professor Adewole made this call when he received the representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), at Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja.
At the occasion, the Minister noted that NANNM was the first professional association he has met with since his assumption of office and this underscores the importance of nurses as important stakeholders in the delivery of quality health care in Nigeria.
He urged the Nurses and Midwives to partner with other professionals in the sector to create an effective health care system that will serve the people, adding that less acrimony will benefit all professionals.
Concerning the numerous challenges bedecking the nursing profession, the Minister said that the sector needed a period of peace for the government to address all the issues in order to ensure fairness, equity and justice and advised the Unions to dialogue with one another.
Also speaking, the Minister of State, Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire described the meeting as the first opportunity for harmonious relationship between Associations, Unions and Government.
Dr. Ehanire informed that what the Government wanted to see in the sector was a patient centred service. Medical tourism is a creation of lack of confidence in the health care system. In his words, ‘this can change through change in attitude and proper management of the available equipments in the hospitals’.
Speaking earlier, the National President of NANNM, Comrade Abdulrafiu A. Adeniji enumerated challenges hindering the development of nursing profession to include: Non implementation of Unified Scheme of service for Nurses and Midwives; Lack of infrastructure and working tools or facilities; Internship for graduate of nursing sciences from Nigerian Universities; amongst others.
