It is another great week of excitement to celebrate the role we play in delivering the highest level of quality care to our patients both as individuals and collectively with other colleagues. Nigerian nurses are becoming conversant with a unified theme and diverse subtheme for this week in various institutions. This theme “A Force for Change” needs to be conceptually analysed beyond the presentations of various renowned guest speakers. What progressive change has been actualised by nurses in the course of promoting the image of the profession?
My i
formativeve evaluation of this “change” as being coined in previous nurses’ week has not shown the desired effect in Nigerian nurses on social media. In time past, both the mass media and social media did not project nurses very well to the general public hence, the public perception of nurses regardless of qualification became appalling. This led to previous “nurses’ week” focusing on actual measures to implement in order to derive an excellent nursing image. A recent observation however, revealed that professional nurses further demean the nursing profession via their comments on different social media platforms basically on issues bothering on nursing profession believing that a solution will be proffered. Unfortunately, these comments globally expose nurses’ weaknesses much more than their strengths.
I use this medium to implore all professional nurses that sincerely advocate for the positive image of nursing profession in Nigeria to air their mind on issues affecting nursing on our various nursing “community” websites rather than other social media platforms where the general public have equal access to. Hopefully, this will promote the positive image of nursing and further enhance the objective goal of celebrating our nurses’ week.
HAPPY NURSES WEEK!
