End JOHESU strike now, NLC tells FG
Worried by government’s indifference and insensitivity to the ongoing strike action by the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Health Care Professionals (JOHESU), now in its second week, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday challenged the Federal Government to with every sense of obligation to JOHESU on the one hand and responsibility to the people of Nigeria end the strike.
NLC’s General Secretary, Comrade (Dr) Peter Ozo-Eson, who warned the Government of the dangers involved in prolonged strike, especially as the issues involved have caused the death of innocent Nigerians, called for speedily bring to an end this strike by way of addressing the substantive issues raised by the health sector unions.
He said “We urge the government to with every sense of obligation to JOHESU on the one hand and responsibility to the people of Nigeria on the other, speedily bring to an end this strike by way of addressing the substantive issues raised by the health sector unions”
“We dare say government’s honour is at stake and the least expected of it is to redeem it by acceding to the demands of JOHESU”, he added.
According to the NLC’s scribe, the health sector unions exhibited every degree of understanding, patience and patriotism as well as exhausted time-tested social dialogue mechanism of Collective Bargaining in an effort to avoid this strike action.
“We consider this indifference between Government of workers callous, injurious and an affront to hordes of Nigerians in need of medicare on a daily basis and a demonstration of government’s disdain for legally-binding agreements and court judgments”, he said
“It is similarly a sad commentary on our democratic culture which ought to be refined”, affirmed.
“In our estimation, the health sector is too sensitive and the situation therein, too fragile for government to maintain this level of obduracy”, he claimed.
“Although issues of health should never be politicized, we are concerned that at the threshold of general elections, government could afford to conduct itself in this manner on issues which it is obliged to act upon”, he however said.
