The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, has protested against the discriminatory tendencies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria against some of its members.
The NANNM, while protesting against the non-enforcement of the National Industrial Court judgment of January 2012, also vowed to take unpleasant decisions if the Federal Government did not act fast to resolve the alleged discrimination and marginalisation.
According to the association, the discrimination against its members by the NMCN has been on for more than 30 years.
Speaking with journalists at the office of the NMCN, President of NANNM, Mr. Abdrafiu Adeniji, said the council, among others, had been discriminating against some nurses in Nigeria.
He said, “The issue is about actualisation of professionalism in the nursing profession in Nigeria that is capable of ensuring adequate, safe, accessible and cost-effective nursing care services of this country. This struggle has been on for as old as the Nursing profession in Nigeria but it was gazetted in 1981.
“What is left to be met in Nigeria is a unified scheme of service for Nigerian nurses and midwives. We have come here to tell our council that they need to do more to defend the collective interest of Nigerian nurses.
“In the event that the Federal Government did not do anything to our scheme of service, if painfully we cannot get what we are looking for, the National Executive Council of NANNM will meet and decide the appropriate action to be taken in this context.”
