Diabetes and sexual problems in women

Unread post by Kunle Emmanuel »

Many women with diabetes experience sexual problems. Although research about sexual problems in women with diabetes is limited, one study found 27 percent of women with type 1 diabetes experienced sexual dysfunction. Another study found 18 percent of women with type 1 diabetes and 42 percent of women with type 2 diabetes experienced sexual dysfunction.

Sexual problems may include
• decreased vaginal lubrication, resulting in vaginal dryness
• uncomfortable or painful sexual intercourse
• decreased or no desire for sexual activity
• decreased or absent sexual response

Problems associated with sexual health should not always be presumed as normal part of getting older, certain physiologic changes can give rise to it. Studies have shown that women who fell uncomfortable during intercourse hardly ask for it, except barren women. The cause of such discomfort include, painful intercourse, which is a by-product of poor VAGINAL LUBRICATION (vaginal dryness), the woman's emotional state, vaginal itching and discharge. Diabetes is implicated as cause of vaginal dryness by its effects on the functions of the lubricating glands in the vagina. Excess sugar in the vaginal region promotes Candida infection with its attendant itching and discharge. Furthermore, at a certain sugar level in the blood, the woman might be having frequent tiredness and depression. These diabetic contribution make most diabetic women IRRITABLE with loss of sexual interest; a cankerworm to marital peace and unity.
