No MCPDP, No Renewal of Licence

Unread post by Queenet »

FOLLOWING its determination to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and high quality of nursing and midwifery care to the public, the Secretary-General and Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Mrs Olatokunbo Olanipekun, has said by January, only nurses with records of continuing professional development programme would be licensed to practice in the country.

Speaking at the maiden edition training programme of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, Mrs Olanipekun said the training had become mandatory, like in other professions, to enhance the knowledge and professional skills for efficient practice.

The registrar, who said what makes a professional was his educational training and expertise, added that trends in medical science were constantly changing, so participation in the mandatory continued development programme would keep them abreast of new innovations in their field of practice.

Mrs Olanipekun, who remarked that the success of the health care delivery system depended largely on the quality and input of nursing professionals, said learning was the only way nursing practice could remain relevant and sound.

She told nurses to always remember that the core of their profession was caring and central to this was helping individuals, families and communities in the alleviation of pain and suffering, preserving of life, protection, promotion and optimisation of health and abilities, as well as prevention of illness and injuries.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdulateef Olopoenia, speaking through Dr Abdulkareem Oyeniran, Director, Secondary Health Care and Training, said the mandatory development programme for nurses was long overdue, considering the decline in nursing practice and the high societal expectation of nurses in the community.

Dr Olopoenia said "patients deserve to be treated with love and respect in a homely atmosphere, rather than being treated based on bed number or disease entities," adding that delivery of qualitative nursing care would promote recovery and minimise risk to the entire citizenry.

State chairperson, Mandatory Continue Professional and Development Programme (MCPDP), Mrs Fadeke Idowu-Toga, said health care professionals would become incompetent and a danger to health care delivery system if they continued to ignore the need for participating in development programmes
