Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program

Unread post by Naijanurse »

The MCPDP was designed by the nursing and midwifery council to ensure that all cadres of nurses are kept abreast of current trends in nursing and health care for improved professional practice in all settings.

By this arrangement, all nurses must attend at least two sessions of MCPDP every three years from January 2012.

Evidence of attendance of MCPDP before renewal of nursing licenses would hence forth be demanded from all nurses. States within the federation have implemented at least a session of the program.

Modules of the MCPDP modules are currently being developed on maternal and child health, psychiatric/ mental health as well as public health/ community health nursing e.t.c

See details on time-table and venue for Lagos.

MCPDP is Mandatory continuing Professional Development Programme. The programme is a brain child of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria which was established in March 2010.

The inauguration of the state facilitators took place at Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan from 23rd – 24th March 2010 and all the states of the federation were mandated to commence training of Nurses.

The programme was designed for all cadres of nurses and is to be undertaken throughout their professional nursing career. It is a continuous formal learning programme within and outside the practice setting.

The MCPDP was conceived and developed for implementation so that professional nurses can remain relevant and kept abreast with modern trends in the area of practice.

The objectives of the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria in establishing MCPDP are:
  • To promote good leadership qualities managerial and organizational skills among nurses thereby enhancing preceptorship and mentorship as a tool for building a dynamic profession.

To expose nurses to current development as well as new trends in health and nursing care.

To sharpen the knowledge and skills of nurses on better ways of rendering qualitative, individualized, goal – directed nursing care using the process approach.

To constantly bring to the fore health issues and conditions that constitute serious health challenges to the individuals, families and communities at large.

Seek to correct significant deficiencies and weaknesses that militate against qualitative nursing care delivery in
health care institutions and at community level.
Be a requirement for participation in council’s activities and assignments as well as nerve.

Please note that evidence of attendance of this professional development programme shall be required by The Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria for the renewal of licence for all nurses in this country

There is no one that is too experienced in his or her profession to stop learning. The nurse, by virtue of her profession and position in the health care delivery system, is expected to be current and versatile in knowledge, skills and attitude to practice. One key to achieving these is continuing professional Development Programme.
