To keep up with the poace and to maintain competence and versatility, the nurse, as a critical component of the healthcare workforce must make continuing professional development programme (CPDP) an integral component of his or her work life.
Continuing professional Development Programme is the means by professionals maintain the knowledge and skills related to their practice. It has also been shown to improve job performance, quality of care, organizational performance and service delivery across employment sectors with consequent reduction in costs. Based on the foregoing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) has instituted the MCPDP to ensure provision of efficient and effective Nursing care services in all health institutions in Nigeria. Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program
The MCPDP was designed by the nursing and midwifery council to ensure that all cadres of nurses are kept abreast of current trends in nursing and health care for improved professional practice in all settings.
By this arrangement, all nurses must attend at least two sessions of MCPDP every three years from January 2012.
Evidence of attendance of MCPDP before renewal of nursing licenses would hence forth be demanded from all nurses. States within the federation have implemented at least a session of the program.
Modules of the MCPDP modules are currently being developed on maternal and child health, psychiatric/ mental health as well as public health/ community health nursing e.t.c
See details on time-table and venue for Lagos.

Re: Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program
The broad objectives of MCPDP are to update the knowledge of nurses in order to assist them appreciate advancement in nursing practice and dynamics of changes in the profession and ensure continued relevance of nurses as members of health care team, amongst others. In view of the fact that nurses need to undergo continuous Education for increased knowledge and skills on better ways of rendering quantitative, individualised goal-directed nursing care, using the nursing process.

Re: MODULE MANDATORY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR NU
There is no one that is too experienced in his or her profession to stop learning. The nurse, by virtue of her profession and position in the health care delivery system, is expected to be current and versatile in knowledge, skills and attitude to practice. One key to achieving these is continuing professional Development Programme.
