When it comes to committing oneself to a life-long career, the key is to adapt what you know, with what the public needs and is willing to pay for, all while incorporating something that you are passionate about.

Just because you are a registered nurse doesn’t mean you don’t have other skills and dreams that can lend themselves to creating a unique self-employment opportunity.

For example, are you artistic? Do you love being creative and have the skills to follow a pattern or create graphic designs? If so, then you might do well creating custom apparel and accessory items for other nursing professionals. Nurses tend to be loyal and love to show this pride in the form of custom scrubs and t-shirts.

Maybe you are more of an educator. You could use your ability to relate with others and act as a tutor for new nursing trainees or as a consultant for existing nurses needing to maintain their professional certification.

Perhaps you think more about the “health” part of your training and see yourself as someone who has figured out how to balance being a full-time care provider and a fit individual? These are the traits of a health coach. Someone who can give relevant tips and advice to their peers about maintaining a healthy lifestyle would be a valuable asset.

In the end, the benefits of having your own home-based nursing business can be beneficial to all aspects of your life, not just in financial reward. If you find a need and have the skills to fulfill it, do so. Be sure that you also take advantage of making your own hours and being able to pick who you want to work with as they are two of the biggest perks you have as a small business owner.
