The female nurse who was yet to be named died on Tuesday at Obalande Lagos.

She is the first known Nigerian to die of the virus.
Sawyer died on July 25, few days after his arrival in the country.
He was sighted at the airport with signs of the virus at the point of entry into the country.

He was quickly isolated and a test conducted on him later confirmed that he had Ebola.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, confirmed this to journalists in Abuja Wednesday morning.

Prof. Onyebuchi had on Monday disclosed that the 70 people who had contact with the Liberian are under surveillance. Out of this figure, eight are already under quarantine.

Briefing journalist on the latest development, the minister also said that five other cases are currently being treated at the isolation ward in Lagos.

TO OUR NURSE ANGEL THAT DIED ATTENDING TO LIBERIAN – AMERICAN EBOLA VICTIM

Sometimes the greatest people on earth
Are the ones who are taken away.
The greatest smiles, the greatest hearts,
We beg and plead to stay.

But sometimes the unexpected will happen,
And sadly there's nothing to do.
Just sit idly by, and wait and cry,
And curse this nightmare come true.

Sometimes encouraging words are exchanged,
And most of the time we shed tears,
And we look on in awe of the greatest strength

When you come to the end of this greatest fight,
You'll see this person who cared.
And loves you for all that you've shared.
Rest in peace - Matron

A Nurse has become the first Nigerian to die of this dreaded Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria. If it were to be a member of other professions whose voices are heard in this country that died this way, hell would have been let loose but outright silence is the case now because a Nurse is the one involved.

Well, I don't know for you but the way we treat Nurses in Nigeria is quite far from how they are treated outside the shores of this country. Apart from being the least paid among the graduates of healthcare disciplines, a Nigerian Nurse receives a token of # 5,000. 00 (five thousand naira) per month as his HAZARD allowance when death, as is the case now, is the hazard associated with his job.

What, then, can we do to remedy the situation Nurses in Nigeria found themselves in? To me, I feel that the government and the entire people of Nigeria should speedily work collaboratively with Nigerian Nurses to place these important professionals as par with their colleagues who are in advanced countries of the world. When we do this, we will fully tap the potentials of these professionals and they will as a result, be happy losing their lives for the sake of saving the lives of others in Nigeria. Time to support the Nigerian Nurses is now!
