October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!

Read below and ensure you share to help someone...

Breast examination in the shower;

The breast self-exam is a way that you can check your breasts for changes (such as lumps or thickenings). It includes looking at and feeling your breast. Any unusual changes should be reported to your doctor. When breast cancer is detected in its early stages, your chances of surviving the disease are greatly improved.

Procedure;
1. It is helpful to have your hands slippery with soap and water.
2. Check for any lumps or thickening in your underarm area.
3. Place your left hand on your hip and reach with your right hand to feel in the left armpit. Repeat on the other side.
4. Check both sides for lumps or thickenings above and below your collarbone.
5. With hands soapy, raise one arm behind your head to spread out the breast tissue.
6. Use the flat part of your fingers from the other hand to press gently into the breast.
7. Follow an up-and-down pattern along the breast, moving from bra line to collarbone. you can also apply the circular or wedge pattern.
8. Continue the pattern until you have covered the entire breast. Repeat on the other side.

Get Health Smart! Have a nice day.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

WHO promotes comprehensive breast cancer control programmes as part of national cancer control plans. The recommended early detection strategies for low- and middle-income countries are awareness of early signs and symptoms and screening by clinical breast examination in demonstration areas. Mammography screening is very costly and is feasible only in countries with good health infrastructure that can afford a long-term programme.

Nigerians should be worried about the alarming increase in the number of women that have been diagnosed with the disease.

“A woman is like the foundation of the family. She’s a wife, sister and mother and once cancer takes her out of the equation, the whole pyramid suffers. Most men who lose their wives to breast cancer find it hard to pick up the pieces of their broken lives.

“Awareness is crucial, if we want to prevent these deaths. If you educate a girl, she will pass on the knowledge to her mother and the community. There is a vaccine against cervical cancer. It should be given to young girls who have not been initiated to sexual intercourse. We need to vaccinate these children and tell them that if they delay in having sexual intercourse it can protect them from this disease. ”

STEP 4
-Raise your left arm.
-Use 3 or 4 fingers of your right hand to feel your left breast firmly, carefully and thoroughly.
-Beginning at the outer edge, press the flat part of your fingers in small circles, moving the circles slowly around the breast.
-Gradually work toward the nipple.
-Be sure to cover the whole breast.
-Pay special attention to the area between the breast and the underarm, including the underarm itself.
-Feel for any unusual lumps or masses under the skin.
-If you have any spontaneous discharge during the month - whether or not it is during your breast self Examination - see your doctor.
-Repeat the examination on your right breast.

STEP 5.
-Step 4 should be repeated lying down.
Lie flat on your back with your left arm over your head and a pillow or folded towel under your left shoulder.
