Malaria Control Awareness
mosquito.jpg
Malaria is one of the most serious health problems of our time. The problem of controlling Malaria in these areas is aggravated by inadequate health infrastructure. This situation has become more complex due to the resistance to the drugs used in the prevention of the disease.

Malaria is responsible for approximately 1-3 million deaths per year, most of these deaths occur among children.
Malaria is the leading cause of absenteeism in African schools.

The widespread and debilitating impact of the malaria epidemic cannot be ignored by any family or organization.
Malaria is transmitted (transferred to the human body) mostly through the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes. The Anopheles mosquitoes bite at night and breed in water. The predominant species that cause malaria in Nigeria is Plasmodium falciparum . Unfortunately, Plasmodium falciparum is the MOST DANGEROUS (most deadly) of the four species of human malaria;
* Plasmodium falciparum
* Plasmodium vivax
* Plasmodium malariae
* Plasmodium ovale

The mosquito sucks human blood and same time injects saliva containing parasites into the person’s bloodstream. The parasites attack the red blood cells and multiply.

Malaria infection will either kill the patient or be defeated by medications or immune system

Malaria is an acute febrile illness with incubation period of 7 days or longer.
The most severe form is caused by P. falciparum.

Symptoms: some authors have described malaria as a MASQUERADE because of the very many symptoms that have been associated with it and ability to mimic many other diseases.

Some of the notable symptoms of malaria include fever – the temperatures rises, headache (almost always present), chills (feeling of cold), vomiting, Cough, Fatigue (feeling weak), Malaise (feeling unwell), rigors (shaking), Arthralgia (pain in the joint), Myalgia (pain in the muscles), etc

Diagnosis of malaria should be based on symptoms AND diagnostic testing to confirm parasitaemia (by microscopy or rapid diagnostic test). Diagnosis based on symptoms ALONE has been shown to have very low specificity (i.e. results in giving anti-malarial drugs to many patients without malaria) and should be discouraged.

You can prevent malaria choosing any of the below method in your home.
Using mosquito Coils: these are affordable and cheap but it is has a very irritating smell. May cause coughing, difficulty in breathing, and other health problems such as upper respiratory tract disorder. There could also be a potential for fire hazard.

Aerosols
•Kill mosquitoes instantly
•Are expensive
•Kill other insects
•Are easy to use

Smell bad/smell causes coughing, irritation

Mosquito nets is the MOST effective way to prevent malaria.

•Protect against mosquitoes/bites
•Last long/are durable
•Are economical
•Have no smell or irritating effect
•Are good/safe (especially for babies/children)
•Protect whole family

Sleeping under an insecticide-treated net (ITN) is the most effective proven method of preventing malaria. However, “Having nets 'in place' and having nets 'used' are two different indicators of success.

The proportion of households owning one or more ITNs in Nigeria increased from 8% in the 2008 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) to 42% in the 2010 Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) and the proportion of children under five years reported to have slept under an ITN the night before the survey increased from 6% in the 2008 DHS to 29% in the 2010.
Progress, yes, but certainly not enough. According to the survey, the most common reason why no one slept under the net was that it was too hot. A smaller percentage of households said the net was too difficult to hang, the net was not needed or there were no mosquitoes. These excuses are the reasons for numbers of high number of malaria cases in our public hospital today.

If you have been following us on malaria control awareness topics, how do we engage more effectively with the public on how to increase net usage?

Malaria is a curable disease if diagnosed promptly and adequately treated. In China, an infusion of the qinghao plant has been used for at least the last 2,000 years to relieve malaria symptom

Hi. everyone
it is important to reaffirm our commitment to fight malaria, openly discuss realistic and feasible approaches to counter the disease, and invest in the future.

Malaria - The big push towards eliminating a killer.

Todat is World Malaria Day, we celebrate the impressive strides made by the global health community to reduce malaria cases and deaths in the past decade. Let's not let fake medicines undermine these efforts. Healthcare providers and caregivers deserve to be confident in the drugs they are providing their patients and loved ones— but 30% of anti-malarial drugs are fake medicines!

Using fake medicines to treat malaria puts the lives of patients in serious danger. It also increases drug resistant parasites and saps public confidence in healthcare systems and genuine medicines.

Malaria is a disease that can be cured, but only with genuine medicines.

Help us spread the word!

Malaria is a life threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. 3.2 billion (half the world population) are at risk each day and 97 countries have on-going transmission. BUT, malaria is curable and preventable and the burden has been reduced significantly through prevention and control measures.
