HIV is transmitted through body fluids of an infected person such as:
Semen
Blood and blood products
Vaginal secretions
Items contaminated by the virus e.g. hair clippers, shaving razors, needles, etc.
Mother to child transmission during pregnancy, at birth or during delivery.

Preventing HIV is as simple as A-B-C-D-E

Abstain from all sexual relationships
Be in joint mutual fidelity with only one sexual partner that is not infected
Consistently and Correctly apply protective devices like condoms; Chemoprophylaxis – medications have been effective in preventing transmission of HIV between partners
Do not share needles; dispose sharps properly, use only screened blood products and consult your doctor if pregnant and HIV positive; Diagnosing - Testing for HIV and other STIs (including among pregnant women) allows for early initiation of treatment, improved outcome and reduction in spread
Educate and teach others about HIV and AIDS.
