Nursing: The Caring Profession

Unread post by Matron Ben »

You don't have to have a calling to be a good nurse, but you do have to care. I'd go so far as to say FIRST you have to care. Lots of great nurses are in it for the money, but one characteristic all great nurses share is that they care about their patients. I would argue that someone who doesn't care should not even BE a nurse!

I’ve gone on record as vigorously opposing the idea that one must have a “calling” to become a nurse, or even to become a good nurse. Even someone who is just in it “for the money” can be a fabulous nurse, and someone who has a calling can be totally incompetent. To be a nurse, you need to be able to communicate well in English (both oral and written form), understand enough mathematics to calculate drug dosages, memorize that a PT goes in a blue tube and a Chem panel in a gold top (or whatever color coding your institution uses), be able to make assessments, plan care and you must be able to utilize your critical thinking skills. (And myriad other things that I could spend all day enumerating without ever getting to my point.)

Nurses are first and foremost caregivers. That means they not only need to know a lot of technical and practical information, but they have to be very good at delivering it in many different and often stressful situations. Patient surveys confirm that a confident demeanor, good interpersonal and organizational skills, a methodical and unhurried approach and a positive attitude contribute to the perception of competence.

Dear Nurses :LET YOUR WORDS BE FEW.
If we must discuss with patients, it must be within ethical boundaries, it must be clinical or psychologically oriented.

We must learn to chose and season our words, we must talk intelligently to attract respect and our discussion must be solutions driven, not made of words that have no value, we must desist from any form of gossips and use of idle words.

We must command respect the way we act and talk in private and public especially with our patients, relatives, colleagues and other professionals within the health care family. Review Case notes, read nursing process, read books, go on line, ask questions, don't resist learning, do intellectual brainstorming and accept corrections.

Do not bully and remember that, the way you respect each other before patients and other health care givers will determine the level of their regards for nursing and nurses. Respect your seniors if you want to be lifted, seniors should correct in love and not in the public open ward.

Let us hold ourselves and our profession very high. Yes! We can!!!, Nursing is noble, let the world see the nobility in us. Act well, talk well and be friendly even when you are stressed up. You are special to man, whether they appreciate it or not,

God appreciates every sacrifice you make in the practice of your profession, therefore, walk tall, stay blessed AND ALWAYS REMEMBER "NO OTHER HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL CAN DO WHAT YOU DO FOR YOUR CLIENTS AND PATIENTS BETTER THAN YOU".

"KUDOS TO ALL NURSES

Shout out to all the nurses out there who are taking care of sick patients. It's one thing to write prescriptions, its another for them to be administered appropriately and timely.

Thanks to all nurses staying up all night to monitor intravenous fluids.

Thanks to all the nurses setting alarms in their brains to remember whose drugs are due.

Thanks to all the nurses giving injections with the least painful technique and massaging the muscles after

Thanks to all the nurses making beds, turning patients, giving encouraging words and helping patientsv through the fight back to health.

You are loved, you are blessed, you are appreciated.
Thumbs up!

Appreciate a Nurse today.

Patient Care
A nurse is a caregiver for patients and helps to manage physical needs, prevent illness, and treat health conditions. To do this, they need to observe and monitor the patient, recording any relevant information to aid in treatment decision-making.
Throughout the treatment process, the nurse follows the progress of the patient and acts accordingly with the patient’s best interests in mind. The care provided by a nurse extends beyond the administration of medications and other therapies. They are responsible for the holistic care of patients, which encompasses the psychosocial, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs of the individual.

Patient Advocacy
The patient is the first priority of the nurse. The role of the nurse is to advocate for the best interests of the patient and to maintain the patient’s dignity throughout treatment and care. This may include making suggestions in the treatment plan of patients, in collaboration with other health professionals.

Planning of Care
A nurse is directly involved in the decision-making process for the treatment of patients. It is important that they are able to think critically when assessing patient signs and identifying potential problems so that they can make the appropriate recommendations and actions.

Patient Educationand Support
A nurse should take the time to explain to the patient and their family or caregiver what to do and what to expect when they leave the hospital or medical clinic. They should also make sure that the patient feels supported and knows where to seek additional information, if needed, is crucial.

Nursing is one of the most exciting and in-demand jobs in the world today. The profession is known globally for having excellent wages and greater benefits. However, the idea that nurses are nothing more than a supplementary asset for doctors is just one of the many preconceived notions that nurses have been facing for years.

People often think that nursing is just an easier alternative to becoming a doctor.
When can we escape from this? Probably not, and that’s beyond our control. But this irrational assumption has proved nothing through the years. It only motivated nurses from showing the world their worth and how much of a difference nursing makes.

So what can we do about this? Plain and simple. If you are a nurse, then you should wear the title with pride. Not many people are capable of doing what you do, and even fewer are capable of doing it with the charisma and passion you do it with.

Just always remember that we, nurses, are unique.
We have the power to promote comfort and relieve strife. Many times we are gifted with the privilege of seeing rapid results of our caring actions. The true benefits of nursing are felt in our minds and hearts. No matter how hard we try, only a nurse can truly understand and appreciate the magnitudour job

Nursing can be defined as a Process by which a Patient is helped by a Nurse to recover from an illness, injury, or to regain as much as independence as possible.
Much is involve in that process.
It is more than just the Performance of routine test,
Such as Checking the pulse, and Blood Pressure.
The Nurse play an integral role in the Patient's recovery.
Very Proficient nurses are more concerned with the Patient's overall reaction to the disorder than the disorder itself,
And are devoted to the control of physical pain,
The relief of mental suffering
And when possible the aviodance of Complications.
In addition the Nurse offer Understanding care which involved Listening with Patience to axieties and fears and providing Emotional Support and Comfort.

Today, Nurses make up what is consindered to be the Largest Professional group in our Healthcare system.
Nursing is not what it was in the days of "FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE" or even fifty years ago.
HOWEVER, many Doctors and even non Doctors apppreciate the role of Nurses in the hospital.
Good Nurses also teach Doctors.
Nurses as the KEY health Professionals, are in a Unique Position to act as Powerful Advocates for a healthy Planet.
Indeed their Contribution to Health Services covers the Whole spectrum of HEALTH CARE.
