IELTS requirements for nurses and midwives wishing to work in the UK

Good news for those people wishing to work as a nurse or midwife in the UK.

It was announced on the 28 November 2018 that there would be changes to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) English language proficiency requirements for overseas nurses and midwives.

Previously, nurses and midwives wishing to work in the UK had to achieve at least an IELTS band 7.0 in all four modules - Writing, Speaking, Listening and Reading. Thus an overall band 7.0.

Under the change, nurses and midwives wishing to work in the UK will still be required to achieve a minimum overall score of 7.0 in IELTS.

However, a 6.5 score in the Writing section of the test will now be accepted alongside a 7.0 score in each of the Reading, Listening and Speaking sections of the test.

This alteration took place from the 5 December 2018. The NMC has said that IELTS results under two years old that were taken prior to this change will also be considered to meet the new requirements.

Writing is one of the most difficult parts of the test and many candidates get stuck at band 6.5 and have difficulty getting the band 7.0.

So this new changes on the IELTS band score requirements for nurses and midwives to work in the UK is good news.

General nurses must obtain an IELTS Academic Certificate. General Training IELTS is NOT accepted by NMC.

There are two versions of the IELTS exam: the academic version and the general training version.

The academic version is for people who want to pursue higher education in universities or other institutions or for professionals such as doctors and nurses who want to practice in a country that primarily speaks English.

The general training version is for people who want to undergo training or gain work experience, or for those who are planning to migrate.

Nurse applicants who want to practice the profession overseas should register for the academic version.
