At the opening ceremony of the EXAMINERS' WORKSHOP 2017, themed : "PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION FOR NURSES AND MIDWIVES : THE PLACE OF OBJECTIVITY IN MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION".
At the event are Alhaji Atolagbe Alege, Honourable commissioner for Health, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, The Emir of Ilorin who happens to be a Nurse ably represented at the event, the Director of Nursing Services, Kwara State, Mr. Jacob Oladele Aransiola, the Secretary- General/ Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Faruk Ahmed, Chairman of Board of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Bola Abosede Ofi, the Keynote address speaker, Mrs. Kofoworola O. Koyejo, the President of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Alhaji Abdurafiu Alani Adeniji (triple A), Nurse leaders from all the 36 States of the federation, including the federal capital territory from different institutions of all tiers of health in the country, and my able self and Adeboboye Ola Christianah.
The keynote address speaker spoke about the purpose of end of programme evaluation which determine what has been learnt over a period of time and to report on progress relative to the curriculum set objectives.
She wondered why student fail at the end of the course only to be eliminated. How did the student get to the last stage? Was proper monitoring done? Was clinical experience monitored and assuredly carried out?
Those who fail at the tail end of their courses are part of those who became quacks. These persons should have been eliminated earlier and should not have been allowed to get to the tail end of the programme.
There should be no external influences. The student must be judged based on merit alone and nothing else. All examiners must be objective to eschew professionalism at all times.
As examiners you must be knowledgeable, exposed to update of the examination you want to mark, participate in the procedures in all clinical areas, be familiar with all instruments, ensure interactions between hospital Nursing directors and yourselves.
Examiners must guard against being influenced by external factors, abide by the council's regulations on examinations. They must not be judgemental, must have professional experience, have integrity and protect the interest of the profession always.
The council too should give examiners adequate or realistic renumeration to prevent their being lured by gratification which can influence the outcome in the schools and colleges.
Schools and clinical areas should be monitored closely for standardization. Training and retraining of examiners must be done to maintain excellence in Nursing Standard and education.
This is a beautiful experience.
Good morning friends.
