Hello great professional colleagues, residing around Lagos and Ogun. A good news is here for us to update our knowledge, have one voice, move to same destination and be a change agent in our various organizations of practice. Don't be left behind! just 10k.

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) B-ZONE (Comprising of Ogun and Lagos States) is organizing a Zonal Scientific Conference.

THEME::CHANGE FOR NURSES: ONE VOICE,ONE DESTINATION.

SUB-THEMES:
. Nursing Educational Reform; Transformational Tool For Improved Healthcare Delivery System
. Strategies For Professional Rebranding
. Nigeria Nursing Service Delivery System; Past, Present and The Future (Professional and IAP Award)
. Fight against Malaria; Improving National Scoreboards Through Improved Nursing Workforce

DATE:9th - 12th August 2016.

VENUE: NURSES' HOUSE, OLUWO VILLAGE ROAD OFF ABIOLA WAY ISALE ABETU, ALADESANMI WAY, ABEOKUTA. OGUN-STATE.

The Zonal Scientific conference is organized to create rapport and update Nurses' knowledge and ultimately improve their service to the populace. The conference is targeted to draw participants not only from the Zone but from across the country

COMMUNIQUE PRESENTED AT THE END OF THE 2016 SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA NURSES AND MIDWIVES (NANNM) B-ZONE HELD FROM 9TH-12TH AUGUST, 2016 AT OGUN STATE NURSES’ HOUSE, OLUWO VILLAGE ROAD, OFF ABIOLA WAY, ISALE-ABETU JUNCTION, ALADESANMI WAY, ABEOKUTA.

Preamble:

The scientific conference of the B zone of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) held from 9th–12th August, 2016. The conference which was attended by participants from the zone (i.e. Lagos and Ogun states) and outside the zone had as its theme “Change for nurses: One Voice, One Destination.”

The opening ceremony which held on the 10th of August was well attended by government officials from Lagos and Ogun states and graced by dignitaries from within and outside the 2 states including eminent personalities and past officials of the association. Government officials in attendance include; representative of the deputy governor of Ogun state; Chief Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga, the commissioners for health in both Lagos and Ogun states ably represented and Honourable commissioner IV, Lagos state health service commission .

We wish to profoundly appreciate the executive governor of Ogun state, His Excellency, SENATOR IBIKUNLE AMOSUN, FCA and the people of Ogun state for their hospitality and for providing an enabling environment. We also appreciate the various eminent personalities that graced the opening ceremony whether in person or in representative capacity.

Highly seasoned resource persons from various walks (academia, political and administration) of life were also available to deliver lectures during the programme on the following sub themes with a keynote address delivered by Mrs. M. J Shode (FWACN); Assistance Director of Nursing Service LASUTH.
Nursing Education Reform: Transformational tool for improved Healthcare Delivery System.

Strategies for Professional Rebranding: Exploring Media Innovation.
Fight against Malaria: Improving National Scoreboard through Improved Nursing Workforce.

Nigeria Nursing Service Delivery System: Past, Present, and the Future (Professionalism and IAP Award).

The last sub theme was a discussion panel led by elder Jire Awowoyin, former NANNM president. Following extensive discussions and deliberations on the theme and the sub themes, it was noted that the modern day nurse and the nursing profession need to change from some of the old ways in other to meet with modern day realities and expectations. Also it is important that nurses in Nigeria unite to speak with one voice and focus unanimously on a common destination for the betterment of the nursing profession.

The following resolutions were reached:
1. We call on the leadership of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at all level to facilitate cohesive harmonization of all stakeholders in nursing services at all levels of policy making and implementation, and other political nurses’ association and non-governmental nursing agencies to initiate a laudable “One Voice One Destination Agenda”.

2. We urge the leadership of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at all level to launch a rebranding committee for the profession.

3. We call on all stakeholders of the nursing profession to explore maximal utilization of the media by broadcasting nursing events and gatherings on electronic, print and social media.

4. We call on the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to wake up to her website innovation and explore other media opportunities. The association should avail herself of the opportunities the social media offers by creating and maintaining social media handles which should be functional and informative e.g. twitter, Facebook, Linked-in and others. The dynamism of Nigerian nurses should be well projected and the benefits of the media adequately harnessed.

5. We praise the leadership of NANNM of latest outcome of National Council on Establishment after decade of struggle and urge them not to relent to see to the adequate circularization and efficient implementation of the gain of just concluded NCE in Minna. Equally we called on the leadership of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), West Africa College of Nursing (WACN), Forum of Nurse lecturers in the university to utilize the window provided by removal of seal on HND and B.Sc. dichotomy to reinvigorate education reform in nursing and adequately implement the abridge program and close the gap in Nursing education pursuit by nurses in Nigeria.

6. We call on the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant stakeholders in the nursing profession to work towards reformation of nursing education in Nigeria. Focus should be on advancement in nursing education and establishment of a National postgraduate college of nursing.

7. We urge National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to initiate partnerships with the West African College of Nursing (WACN) and other agencies for progressive research activities in the healthcare industry as it relates with the nursing profession in Nigeria.

8. We urge the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other stakeholders in nursing to accept other certificate obtain from other professional organizations in Nursing and award credit to be used along with the credit from Mandatory Continuous Professional Development Programme. (MCPDP) for renewal of professional license.

9. We urge all Nigerian nurses to play a role in correcting the media misrepresentation of nursing image by taking strategic actions such as writing articles on media, telephone calls to radio shows relating to healthcare matters, and confronting authorities when necessary. Nurses must start speaking for themselves.

10. We call on all relevant stakeholders should take decisive actions on combating the menace of quacks and their associations, trainers and employers in Nigeria so as to save the image of the nursing profession and the health of the general public from the dangers posed by these undesirable elements.

11. We urge all Nigerian nurses to participate actively in politics so as to gain the necessary leverage to make changes necessary required for the progressive future of nursing in Nigeria with consequential benefits for the public healthcare system.

12. We call on the Nigerian legislative arm and concerned stakeholders to set machineries in motion to for an urgent review of the legislation regulating the practice of nursing in Nigeria. We need strong, versatile and robust legislature to achieve the glorious dreams of the Nigerian Nurses.
