Nothing is wrong with nursing profession, but many things are wrong with the administration & administrators of nursing in Nigeria. They made nursing what it is today, and they seems to be insensitive to nurses yearnings and pains. Only if they will hear nurses out and do the needful, we will all smile.
Training style is not in conformity with the Nigeria system of education, nurses continuously burn energy in schools of nursing under ministry of health, for three calendar years, just to come out with only a professional certificate, then they begin another Israelite journey to the university for another five years as specified by NUC to repeat most of the things they learn in Schools of nursing, Only for them to come to the labour market and be priced like a school cert holder because the private hospitals prefers the unprofessional auxiliaries trained by them and legalised by health administrators.
Yes! They legalised it because they are not concern neither do they ever raised any eye brow against this practice since it is the doctor's initiative. The government employers or administrators will tell a graduate nurse to accept the lowest level because they did not advertise for graduate nurses, reluctantly and fully demoralised for years wasted these young nurses accepts this offer. The Medical doctors left the tooth large of the hospital, the lab scientist did same, ditto to Physiotherapists and pharmacists, they only come to the hospital for practical training. They do internship in the hospitals to solidify their training. Only nurses are left to suffer all sorts of inhuman treatment, and the irony of it is that , no hospital can deliver health care effectively without the nurses. If nurses are well treated, rated, and remunerated, they will do better and patients will smile home.
My suggestion is that:
1. NURSING TRAINING SHOULD BE UNIVERSITY BASED,
2. SCHOOLS OF NURSING SHOULD BE ABOLISHED, WHILE JUST A HANDFUL SCHOOLS OF NURSING BE RETAINED FOR PURE PRACTICAL TRAINING AFTER UNIVERSITY EDUCATION FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR, WHICH SHOULD BE THE LAST YEAR IN THE UNIVERSITY, ( One SON
in each geo-political region) During this one year students will sit for the Council exam, just like the law students.
3.ONE YEAR INTERNSHIP SHOULD BE APPROVED FOR ALL NURSING GRADUATES WITH GOOD RENUMERATION.
4. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT ONLY EXPERIENCING SHORTAGE IN THE AREA OF NURSE PATIENT RATIO, OTHER PROFESSIONALS ARE SCARCE TOO, SO THEY SHOULD NOT USE SCARCITY AS THE REASON FOR THE CONTINUOUS EXISTENCE OF OR TRAINING OF NURSES UNDER MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
5. NIGERIANS NEED DOCTORS, THEY ARE VERY FEW, BUT THEIR TRAINING IS REGULATED AS PER NUMBER OF TRAINEE PER SCHOOL, NOT WITHSTANDING THE URGENT NEED FOR DOCTORS, THEY CAN NEVER AGREE TO BE TREATED LIKE NURSES. TRAINING OF NURSES SHOULD BE UPDATED TO UNIVERSITIES JUST LIKE OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. ENOUGH OF MERRY GO ROUNDING AND WASTING OF SCARCE RESOURCES. MORE UNIVERSITIES SHOULD OPEN UP DEPARTMENT OF NURSING.
6. THE ACT ESTABLISHING NURSING COUNCIL SHOULD BE REVIEWED TO ALLOW FOR POSITIVE CHANGE.
7. UNTIL WE HAVE APPRECIABLE REVIEW OF NURSING TRAINING, PRACTICE , AND ADMINISTRATION, THERE CAN NOT BE ANY MEANINGFUL HEALTH CARE DELIVERY AS DESIRED BY ALL IN NIGERIANS.
8. NO OTHER PROFESSIONALS CAN DO WHAT NURSES DOES FOR THEIR PATIENTS. NURSING IS DIFFERENT FROM MEDICINE. WE ARE PATIENT'S ADVOCATES, WE DO WHAT PATIENTS CANNOT NO FOR THEM UNTIL THEY ARE ABLE TO DO SO. NO OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONAL CAN DO THAT.
9. NURSES DESERVE SOME AUDIENCE. EVEN, OBAMA LISTENED TO U.S A NURSES.
10. PRESIDENT BUHARI AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATORS SHOULD LISTEN TO NURSES. WE LOVE WHAT WE DO AND WE WANT TO DO MORE.
Oh my God!, it is a dream! I pray this will come to reality in Nigeria in Jesus name.

We only need few SON to serve as practical areas for students in their final year in the universities, just as it is in Law. This will solidify their practical knowledge and enable them pass their professional exam with nursing council, once and for all. All our efforts will be geared towards moving up not going round diploma courses that are very tough but add no value to nursing economically, and in the academic corridor of power it is nothing to write home about. Nursing education needs an urgent review and reformation to be in conformation with the Nigeria system of education.

Oh my God! Just the right chosen and sensible facts @Folakemi my prayers for you is to go higher than what you are now. Hope you are a Unionist i mean one of the exco in your branch? If not, pls contest. Start from somewhere so that when you go for meetings your presence will be felt from local to national and meet the who is who in the government that has the listening ears and compassionate heart to nurses agitation.
Meanwhile this writes up should not just be only in this medium it should go to our dailies for reasonable minds to see. Honestly we need a wide spread advocacy.
