Thinking of either University or School of Nursing

Unread post by Kunle Emmanuel »

NURSING IS A PROFESSION AND NOT A VOCATION!!!!
Image
Nurses are degree holders(BNSC)
Nurses are Master degree holders(MSN)
Nurses are Phd. Holders(DNP)
Nurses are Consultants, practitioners and professors.

HOW TO START A NURSING CAREER

There are two educational pathways to nursing profession in Nigeria; THE HOSPITAL - BASED PATHWAY And THE UNIVERSITY - BASED PATHWAY.

THE UNIVERSITY - BASED PATHWAY is followed through a degree programme offered only in the university which runs for 5 years and leads to the award of BNSc (Bachelor of Nursing Science) , Registered Nurse(RN) certificate, Registered Midwife (RM) certificate and Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN). THE UNIVERSITY BASED - NURSING PROGRAMME is jointly regulated by the NUC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria(NMCN)

THE HOSPITAL - BASED PATHWAY is followed through a 3-year certificate programme offered in schools and colleges of nursing in Nigeria. Completion of this programme leads to the award of the Registered Nurse (RN) certificate otherwise called the Basic Nursing Certificate(BNC) only. Unlike the university-based nursing education, schools and colleges of nursing are singly regulated by the NMCN.

Bolade Evelyn Oluwabunmi University my dear
Agbele Naomi University
Ariyo Temitope Bsc Nursing
Mbachu Ndubuisi William University
Chinyere Eze Chidobi Bsc Nursing my dear
Ahunanya Johnbosco Go to university obtain RN and Bsc Nursing, after you go for NYSC and become a full Nursing graduate.
Nnadi Adaeze Bsc Nursing
ZealotsMotivator George Oluwaseun University straight
Justina Awosusi University is d best
Adisa Ibijoke Elizabeth Mushafau For greater experience school of nursing, for pure basic study and to obtain a certificate: university. Is it a vocation or a profession to you? Make a choice.degree can be obtain at any time.are you in it purely for the money or care of humanity
Adisa Ibijoke Elizabeth Mushafau I also support university, but you must be ready to forget what your certificate can offer you if you want to really gain experience. Its never learn in a classroom.

Christy Jerome Why should you think of wasting your precious year's crawling when you know you can fly?
Ene Odaudu Folks lets not mislead our younger generations. She can still obtain both practical and academic experience in the university.
Okpanachi Enape Both of them are good academically but, if you want to avoid humiliation as is being experienced by RNs from schools of nursing today then go to university straight. Nigeria is all about paper qualifications so hurry up and join the league. If you go to school of nursing you will still require another 4 5 yrs before you obtain a degree. By the way take a look at other fields in health sciences like physiotherapy, pharmacy, lab science etc govt rate them ahead of Nursing so go for the best.
Bamidele Kazy Tundeks advise your younger ones to go university and stop wasting time for Nursing school.
Blessing Agwu Apply for both, if u gain admission in son first, then acquire that one first and then go for degree later but if both gives u admission same time I advise u go for bnsc. Practical is a matter of interest and dedication, I believe u can still learn as a bsc student
Aina Olajumoke Bsc nursing is more 100% okey than going to school of nursing
Aderonke Opawande Go to the University, be open minded during clinicals, learn to ask questions when in doubt, ull come out better...no point going to School of Nursing..
.
Adebowale Adewale Go to University because of self esteem but for knowledge sake go to school of nursing

Oladimeji Bolanle Oyekale Bnsc, don't waste your time in school of nursing
Gbemigun Funmilayo Please go to the University, avoid Israelite journey that might truncate your destination.... Medicine doesn't have diploma programs, yet they become experienced. If there are no schools of Nursing, if all nurses are University graduates, there will be no room for comparison.

Aliyu Garba Having both will make you sail through the competitive health industry in Nigeria. Meaning you will have academic and professional certificates.
Ali Umar Kamba You will get all in university .your thinking will be holistic
Unaegbu Gift Those who are saying go to uni,can u tell us that it was easy gain admission into uni read nursing, can you help her in securing admission as per naija thing.why not tell her try both cos she might be at home in the next 3-5 year trying to gain admission into the uni when her mates has graduated from son.
Destinetenny Onyeihe @ Gift life is all about struggle & risk taking. It does not mater how long but how well. What will take this profession to a greater height is by equating with its counterparts & that is first getting degree & not diploma. This is naija
Brownsuga Nneoma Ozim-Okafo I keep asking myself what are the basis for this 'go to SON so you get experience. ...it's laughable 'cos Dr's don't go to school of Medicine. .they get their degree. ..do their internship and learn the rest on the job...and yet with all our experiences in schools of nursing and midwifery. ..we still don't ever match up to them in anything...
Personally...cos of my experiences in both school of nursing and uni...I think we are drawing ourselves back by still encouraging and promoting schools of nursing...we should strive to be exposed to teachings by professionals in the university settings....
Take for instance if we all are exposed to the same lectures of Anatomy..physiology. ..embryology. .pharmacology etc as by the same professors as the medical students ..don't you think we will be more knowledgeable in those areas thus contributing more to the health care system...during my degree days... we had lectures with student Dr's up till 2nd year...which wasn't ideal save for the school I went to...it's a lot different in UNEC and UNZIK...just the much I know...
Again here in the western world. ..it might interest you to know that the nursing students use same textbooks that our medical students here in Nigeria use..eg Davidsons, Kumar & Clark etc...ppl taught as par with Dr's will always have an edge over their counterparts ...
Please let us just stop this idea of experience bull crap because it no longer holds water...we should aspire to have Doctorates and more in this Nursing and not just the basic regular practice that my mother had over 40yrs ago....because it's only when we have academicians in this profession that we will move forward. .,Nurses that can stand and talk/challenge professors of medicines and surgeries...that's the kind of Nurses that I wish for the Nigerian Nursing board...#and shout out to my colleague and friend @Amara Jessy Okonkwo all the way from SON NAUTH NNEWI to her BNSc and MSc in the UK and now here in canada pursuing her Doctorate in Nursing ...maximum respect for her...we need more news like this!
Brownsuga Nneoma Ozim-Okafo Thanks my dear...it's time we wake up from this self deceit sleep that have kept bondage all these years!
Akinsanya Balogun Iyabode University directly my dear,
Douglas Uranta My don't be confused RN is applicable to SoN and university products of nursing! The SoN gives you a general nurse certificate while the university award Bsnc. So, whichever choice you made, you would still at the end sit and pass NMCN exams to obtain RN licence to practice!
Sagir Nuhu I'm sorry Sir, getting RN in Both SON & University doesn't make BNSc Certificate & Diploma the same. World is changing, we need to wake up.
Okpanachi Enape Mr Uranta you are right but the problem is the way SON products are looked down upon. That's why we should advice the younger ones to go straight to university and encourage the RNs to go for their degree. But not this hollow argument by some who think that SON products are only practically oriented. Meanwhile, I have not seen any innovation being brought into nursing practice by those self acclaimed "knows it all".
Dupe Popoola Going to school's of nursing is best because you will have enough experience both practically, physiologically. When you see a patient, hearing d history &examining the pt.You can diagnose & even treat before Dr's arrival. But just going in for degree course is just for u ,to have the certificate.. No knowledge nor experience at all to treat ur pt.Some Drs can not even go straight into the vain of an adult, talk less going into babies veins, they go around begging Nurses for help. This I''ve witnessed several times since I came on board the profession.
Douglas Uranta A lot of ignorance abound on who is a nurse! It baffle me to read about university BNsc graduates refering to SoN graduates as RN. This a big misconception! RN is a professional recognition accorded a nurse who has completed a course or programme in nursing by the regulatory body or council (NMCN)! RN is to nurses whether SoN or university graduates by NMCN! Anybody who claimed to be a nurse with RN is a quack!!
Okpanachi Enape I think it is a mistake, he actually meant to say that if you have degree in nursing without sitting for and passed council final qualifying exams you are still a quack
Benjamin Ibrahim Pls dont turn this forum into a battle ground of Drs & Rcn's, first define the word "NURSE" in a simple term, then follow it up with Do i have the features, attributes, personality of a nurse? then follow it up with your area of specialisation, then your kpalli(certificate)
Benjamin Ibrahim we have many in the medical profession who though are trained, certified & equipped medically to serve & save but lacks the features of a nurse because their attitude\ character disqualifies them,a patients experience with those in the medical field-2012-2013
Omowumi Ijaodola-Salau Pls go straight to the university.

The researcher came to comprehend that nursing understudies have a great deal of uneasiness when they begin their clinical practice in the second year. It is assumed that an examination of the understudy's view on their clinical experience can develop a reasonable clinical demonstrating system in nursing preparing.

I think that going to a university and receiving your BSN is the best for these reasons:

1. A BSN degree will be good for you because it gives you entry-level work in nursing.

2. Most of the students nowadays do get their BSN degrees.

I wish you the best and please go for your BSN degree.

Aliyu Garba

The issue of three year general nursing program and direct midwifery programs should not be encourage by present nursing tutors and nurses. All nurses and friends of nurses should encourage youths and practicing nurses to key in to nursing degree programs. Get the academic nursing qualifications (degrees) and then go for the professional ones like midwifery, orthopedic, perioperative, paediatric, psychiatric.

As nurses, we must get involved in acquiring degrees because it is in thing today in Nigeria. No matter how good you are if you do not have a degree, you can not compete with other members of the health team. Necessary is the mother of invention, so nurses should encourage people to go directly for nursing degree programs. Anything short of that should be discouraged. After all entry requirements are same for nursing degree and three year program "which is not appreciated". Nurses should be pushful to see that nurses are sponsored for degree programs by its employers.

Principles of change should be adhered to, so that in the nearest future the minimum employment requirement for nurses in Nigeria should be BNsc. Nurses should not fall prey to that " bullshit" we don't have enough nurses therefore we should reduce entry requirements to less credits or going for BNsc is a waste of time.

Lawal Almustapha
I am not against this but the reality is basic nursing certificate holders possess more practical skills (basic and advanced nursing procedures) than the nursing degree holders who are more theoretically sound, nursing is all about doing rather than just having the certificate.

As a nurse I was opportune to work with uncountable copper nurses (NYSC) and it has been observed that they are left behind in nursing procedures and this has influence in the quantity and quality of nursing service delivery.
N&MCN should try to:
1. Reduce the years of degree program for basic nurses (RN) from 4 to 3 considering the fact that you already spent 3years for basic. Nursing program
2. All post basic nursing programs should be of the same duration either 12months or 18months.

I remain loyal sir. Am not trying to challenge you because I can not even if I want to but am just trying to share my view.
Olajide Oluwabunmi Gbore I totally agree with you on your point, but what of medical Doctors Lab, Pharmacist etc, majority of them learn on the job. The intelligent ones only apply what they have learnt in the school in the clinicals and no one notices that. Their entry point is a degree on grade level 12. why can't we emulate that and move forward too. God will help us all. Grant us the courage to move this profession to the next level. Amen
Chisomu Chisom D issue with being good with pratical in a university or SON depends on the INDIVIDUAL...o yes!!! If you are determined to KNOW your pratical aspect of nursing and READ LIKE MAD whether university or SON you will make exploit in the profession.

I have seen lots of RNs that could not even explain simple terms in the profession and have also seen some BNSC nurses as well and vice versa. PERSONAL EFFORT TO KNOW and your commitment to your BOOKS makes you outstanding in d profession. Dont forget just as SON have their teaching hospitals most university have as well. It all DEPENDS ON THE STUDENT. SON is 3yrs uni is 5yrs doesnt make any student more intelligent than others.
(commitment to STUDY DOES) we all have one goal at d end of RN /BSC and thats d wellbeing of OUR PATIENTS....we all need to upgrade our certificates....no doubt....less power tussle...more love for ourselves, our noble profession n most importantly our PATIENTS. longliveNURSINGPROFESSION

Ene Odaudu Even though am a product of school of Nursing , I support the scrapping of school of Nursing so that we can move ahead from mediocrity.
Nkechi Odum As a matter of urgency, the NMCN should upgrade all basic nursing schools to degree awarding institutions or get them affiliated to the dept of Nursing in the universities. Personally, I think that the NMCN is too slow in moving this profession forward.
Aliyu Garba Mallam Lawal, you are not far from right from your submission. The status, respect and marketability of nursing can only raise up when all nurses acquired BNsc. Ene said it, Nigerians considered three year nursing program as mediocrity. Go for academic nursing degree and later back it with professional nursing programs. The gap observed by mallam Lawal will be closed, on the other hand those with nursing certificate should bridge it with degree. A sandwich program should be pursued with the federal ministry of education for nurses with RN certificate. NANNM and NMCN should do pursuing. This is the gospel we should be spreading. To be relevant, nurses must catch up with advancement and society. The only answer is first go for academic nursing degree to be followed by specialization.

Nkechi Odum Even with the BNSC, university curricular is totally wrong, please someone should correct me if I am wrong. Anatomy, Med surg, microbiology and most courses undertaken for 3years at the schools of nursing is repeated again. Is it that Anatomy has changed over the years or med surg changed!! Or is it that the ones learnt those three years have become obsolete??? Personally I think Bnsc curriculum should be geared towards making the degree nurse a better leader/ Manager. Also they should be taught how to do research and critique literatures and write proposals not drawing us back to what we already know. I even heard that the MSC curricular in some schools are proposing to make Anatomy compulsory for all MSC students!!!! Rubbish if you ask me.
Ifeoma Okeke Ma u have said it all, many of my friends travelled to abroad and did their Bnsc just 1yr, and they accepted it. i pray that all this stagnated matrons will retire and give us room for mordenization of nursing profession
Odo Christian In my opinion, issues of unit or departmental heading in nursing profession should not be measured with year of service but rather academically qualification. By ds, d motivation desired will triggered.
Nkechi Odum Exactly. But right those old fashioned and slow motion system still remain with us. That is why to my opinion the profession is stagnated There is no motivation at all.
Juliet Onyenike I think I have to support what Odum Nkechi said, the Anatomy, Med surg and many others we learnt in sch of nursing over the years has not changed. In my own opinion the 4yrs is just too much. For someone who R,N and R, M should have a maximum of 2yrs to get his/her degree
Nkechi Odum In my school in the UK Bsc top up is one year and our graduates come out sound and better exposed in leadership and research training. Although I did my Bsc in Nigeria, I regretted the time I wasted here because I actually learnt nothing new or different from the things I learnt in my 3 years Nursing training. But with my MSC from the UK, I am good to go.
Uche Ifeka Nurses, we should not be deceived with this HND stuff it is only on paper that is not even made public, you only get to know it is HND when you are processing for further education abroad, if it is truly regarded as the said HND why are we not going for NYSC like other HND holders
Emmex Dee Da'ar Shutting down nursing schools woun't solve the problem, but affiliating them with both federal and state universities in order to allow them run degree programs is the answer and the way forward.
Taiwo Dupe Scrapping the schools of Nursing is the best. They are no longer relevant in today's academic programs. The teaching hospital s will never be in support of this because of the financial benefits at the detriment of these young and intelligent students.
