SCHOOL OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN
ADMISSION INTO POST-BASIC OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING COURSE FOR 2018 - 2019 SESSION
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the above named School for a 1-year fulltime course in Occupational Health Nursing beginning from November 2018 leading to certification and licensing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as Registered Occupational Health Nurse (ROHN).
The course is designed to equip Registered Nurses (RN) with the theoretical underpinnings and skills required for becoming competent Occupational Health Nurses in conserving, promoting and restoring the health of individuals and groups in diverse workplaces.

1. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
i. Be Registered Nurses (RN) with current practice license of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of
Nigeria.

ii. Have at least five (5) credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings in English languages,
Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry from WAEC or NECO O’level examinations.

iii. Have at least one (1) year post qualification experience as a General Nurse.

iv. Approval for one (1) full year of release from employers or other training Schools.

v. The course is offered as both residential and full time. The school reserves the right to rusticate
any student found to be involved in another course or employment during training without refund of fees paid.


2. METHOD OF APPLICATION
Forms are obtainable with effect from MONDAY 23RD JULY, 2018 from the School of Occupational Health Nursing, University College Hospital, Ibadan upon presentation of the followingp:
i. Receipt in respect of payment of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000.00) only to the University
College Hospital School of Occupational Health Nursing Treasury Single Account (TSA) in any commercial Bank.

ii. Bank Slip in respect of Two Hundred Naira (N200.00) only payment made into Oyo State
Nursing & Midwifery Council Committee Account First Bank Plc. 2019704292


3. CLOSING DATE FOR PURCHASE AND SUBMISSION OF COMPLETED FORMS IS FRIDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2018

Occupational Health Nurse/Industrial Nurse
Occupational health nurses are leaders of public health and care in the workplace. They specialise in the care and well-being of people at work. In Nigeria, most nurses are refer to as industrial nurse
Occupational health nurses are qualified and registered nurses, many of whom have chosen to gain additional training and qualifications as specialist community public health nurses
Occupational health nurse is someone who “provides for and delivers health and safety programs and services to workers, worker populations and community groups. The practice focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from work-related and environmental hazards. Occupational and environmental health nurses have a combined knowledge of health and business that they blend with health care expertise to balance the requirement for a safe and healthful work environment with a ‘healthy’ bottom line.”

Occupational health nurses work with employers and employees to identify health and safety needs in the workplace. To meet those needs, occupational health nurses:
Coordinate and deliver services and programs.
Promote an interdisciplinary approach to health care and advocate for the employee’s right to prevention-oriented, cost-effective health and safety programs.
Encourage workers to take responsibility for their own health through health education and disease management programs, such as smoking cessation, exercise/fitness, nutrition and weight control, stress management, control of chronic illnesses and effective use of medical services.
Monitor the health status of workers, worker populations and community groups.
Conduct research on the effects of workplace exposures, gathering health and hazard data.

Working Conditions
Occupational health nurses work in manufacturing and production facilities, hospitals and medical centers as well as in other employment sectors, including government. Workplace activities might include health and wellness, case management, ergonomics, workplace safety, infection control, disaster preparedness and others such as travel health. Occupational health nurses fill a variety of roles in their jobs, including clinicians, case managers, educators, directors and consultants. The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, but may vary, depending upon the work environment, position and responsibilities. They work as offshore medic

Salary Range in Nigeria is much better than hospital jobs.

Academic Requirements
Occupational health nurses must have BLS and ACLS. Typically, nurses entering the field have a baccalaureate degree in nursing and experience in community health, ambulatory care, critical care or emergency nursing.
